Breakthrough for Industrial Hemp Fiber in Sweden – Hemp Innovation Signs Off-Take Agreement with Health Textiles
One of Sweden’s leading players in hemp development and production – Hemp Innovation – has signed an off-take agreement with HealthTextiles, a company developing clothing for the healthcare sector. The agreement covers production of up to 200 tons, valued at approximately SEK 7 million.
Sweden is following the international trend and building up industrial hemp production, one of the most profitable crops in the world to cultivate. The fast-growing Swedish company Hemp Innovation has, in a short time, convinced several of Sweden’s most successful farmers to transition their cultivation and increasingly focus on this rapidly growing and environmentally friendly plant. Through its business unit Hemp Foods, the company has already started selling hemp seeds to leading retailers and is now also commercializing the plant’s strong stalk, which contains the world’s strongest natural fibers.
”The agreement confirms the commercial potential of Hemp Innovation’s business. Hemp fiber has broad and versatile applications,” says Clas Dahlén, founder and CEO of Hemp Innovation, and continues:
”We see increasing interest from Swedish businesses in using hemp for industrial purposes, particularly due to its high profitability potential.”
On the international market, hemp’s potential has been in the spotlight for quite some time. Over the past two years alone, the market has seen significant growth—from an estimated value of approximately SEK 80 billion in 2023 to SEK 100 billion in 2024, and projected to reach SEK 500 billion by 2032, according to Fortune Business Insights.
”Through this agreement, we can secure the long-term supply of industrial hemp fiber for our patented TorTex yarn and fabric. Therefore, it is crucial to develop the ecosystem for industrial hemp cultivation,” says Tomas Persson, founder and owner of HealthTextiles, and continues:
”Previously, the challenge for farmers interested in growing hemp was the lack of a secure market. The off-take agreement between HealthTextiles and Hemp Innovation creates that market.”
To meet the increasing demand for industrial hemp, Hemp Innovation is scaling up by building its own fiber processing plant and, in connection with this, raising additional capital.
