HealthTextiles Introduces Anti-Viral ‘TorTex’ Fabric, Helping Protect First Responders and Healthcare Workers During COVID-19 Pandemic

HealthTextiles, a leading innovative manufacturer that combines the latest technologies with heritage craftsmanship for world-class production of PPE, today announced it has verified the anti-virus capability of its patented TorTex fabric.

The testing completed at SGS Biosafety Laboratory confirmed that TorTex fabrics reduced the risk of H1N1 infection by 20x compared to standard fabrics, with 99.9% of the virus unable to infect a patient or healthcare worker after two hours with TorTex.

“These are amazing results for TorTex, that could lead to safe working conditions for coronavirus first responders and healthcare workers, protect many lives and open new market opportunities for HealthTextiles, especially in this time of pandemic,” says Zara Pons Vila, phD and Manager of Strategic Initiatives at EIT Health.

Recently awarded Best Healthcare Uniform Provider by Global Health & Pharma, the Swedish scaleup’s mission is to reduce, and ultimately eliminate healthcare-associated infections by developing the world’s most advanced PPE, protecting HCWs from pathogen exposure during patient care.

“In Sweden alone, health associated infections from bacteria exposure in hospitals cost 6–7 billion SEK annually, with 9% of people admitted contracting a healthcare-associated infection during their hospital stay,” says HealthTextiles founder Tomas Persson.

“Even with adequate PPE, the risk of healthcare workers contracting COVID-19 is five times higher than the likelihood of someone contracting it from the general community. Within the crowded, chaotic environments at hospitals and care homes, our patented TorTex fabric provides the protection that frontline responders need to save lives and stay safe throughout the work day,” Persson continues.

Founded by Harvard MBA and entrepreneur Tomas Persson, textiles expert Birgitta Persson and public service leader Torgny Persson, HealthTextiles is a Swedish scaleup that has been selected into EIT Health’s Bridgehead programme and was awarded by Ahlgrens Foundation in 2018 as one of the most innovative startups in the Gävleborg region.

HealthTextiles works with a number of high-profile customers across Europe, including Hungarian healthcare company DoubleRose and Swedish sportswear company Kordiebykordie.
